The government says the medical benefits of allowing the creation of hybrid embryos for research purposes could ease the suffering of millions of people, including those affected by Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. BBC
The Archbishop of Cardiff, the Most Reverend Peter Smith, said he has privately advised MPs, including at least one minister, to vote against certain aspects of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill icWales
W.T.F? Since when are elected representatives the lackeys of the Church? Since when did the ideas of the Vatican get to rule people who have been chosen to represent that actual people in the constituency? Since when did the Vatican get to rule this non-Catholic country?
Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor said: “I think Catholics in politics have got to act according to their Catholic convictions, so have other Christians, so have other politicians.” BBC again
So everyone has to act in the way that the Cardinal says? He is covering every base there, he is including atheists and his intimation is that everyone must vote against it. Talk about intolerance. what he actually means is “If you vote for this Bill then you are nothing.” He is trying to make them an offer they cannot refuse. Sad thing is that some spineless politicians will believe him.
Brown is being told by his own supporters that he must offer MPs a free vote to avoid a ministerial clear-out, which could include Catholic ministers such as Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly Scotland on Sunday
Now that is a great idea. That woman should not be in government anyway.
I would naturally assume that all the MP’s who vote in this way are perfectly happy that they are not acting democratically. You know how we read that the whole of the US wants something to happen, The Senate wants it to happen, Congress wants it to happen and the President says ‘No way” and kills it? That is what the MP’s will be doing.
There are over 60,600,000 people in the UK and yet only 861,000 are Catholics. That is less than 1.5% that are trying to make the whole country act in their way. If you had 200 people in front of you who could make a choice and just 3 said to do something would you seriously just go with them? Wouldn’t you insist on a wider view? Wouldn’t you actually think that those 3 were being big-headed and selfish? Wouldn’t you resent them?
It is also shocking the amount of time the media are giving to the Cardinal and his mates and how little - that’s none - is given to the medical benefits.
Let’s not forget that if they - the Vatican god-botherers - had their way then there would be no abortion under any conditions and no contraception (and no real apologies for all the child abuse they inflict). Free vote or not this Bill needs to pass and for it to fail because a few robed individuals choose to toe the Vatican line would be shameful.

Let’s see: a supposedly voluntary eunuch graces us with his ideology which is pro-birth at any cost. (Pronatalism is a dead branch of racist social darwinsim — actually created by Herbert Spencer.)
Pity those poor unfeeling excess embryos which will be destroyed in fertility clinics. You’d think that his high-and-mightiness would welcome dedicated wannabe moms. But no, every little ‘snowflake’ has already been ensouled at its maculate conception.
It should be obvious that for fundie and RC alike pro-birth is not pro-life. In fact their ideology is pro-Death — creating disease, poverty and ignorance worldwide through overpopulation, damning safe non-reproductive sex, and blocking responsible medical research.
Hats off to a perverse institution which for many decades has provided a haven for pedophiles, hiding their sex crimes from civil courts, moving them on to new parishes to enjoy once more the fruit of the Lord’s human bounty. “Suffer the little children to come unto me . . .” — yes, so unintentionally wry in the KJV.
